As the New Year approaches, you may be thinking about what New Year’s resolutions you should make. Here’s 3 reasons why you should consider making going vegan your New Year’s resolution…
1) It’s kinder to animals
Animals bred for food suffer short and miserable lives. The vast majority of them are farmed in intensive factory farm conditions, where their basic instincts are denied to them, they suffer mutilations, and disease is commonplace. Animal Aid investigation have found horrific scenes in British farms, including deliberate abuse, dead and dying animals all over barn floors, left to suffer, and other horrific scenes – even on ‘free range’ and ‘high welfare’ farms. And regardless of where they were raised, they all face a brutal and horrific death at the slaughterhouse.
2) For the planet
Going vegan is one of the most effective things an individual can do to reduce their impact upon the planet. Animal agriculture is destroying the planet; it contributes to about 16% of overall global greenhouse gas emissions, vast swathes of deforestation, occupies the majority of farmland globally, and is the biggest cause of water pollution in the UK.
In contrast, the carbon footprint of a vegan diet is as much as 60% smaller than a meat-based diet, and requires much less land and resources.
3) For your health
Every major dietetic association in the world agrees that a balanced vegan diet provides all of the nutrients one needs to be healthy. It can also have health benefits; research shows that those following a plant-based are at a reduced risk of type-2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
