On Happy Cow’s 25th Anniversary the Platform Highlights Consistent Growth & Announces Most Vegan-Friendly Cities Report

Happy Cow, the global platform that helps users find vegan and vegetarian dining options wherever they travel, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Founded in 1999, HappyCow now claims to be the world’s largest vegan platform, used in over 185 countries. It currently lists 10,357 vegan restaurants, 20,552 vegan venues, and 244,584 businesses that offer vegan options; these include not just restaurants and cafes but also food trucks, bakeries, grocery stores, shops, and hotels.

Over 1.2 million users have contributed reviews, photos, and recommendations to HappyCow, while the mobile app has received more than 4 million downloads. An average of over 3,500 new vegan venues and 39,650 vegan-friendly businesses are added each year.

HappyCow even saw an during COVID-19, despite the struggles faced by the food service industry at the time. The platform reported in August 2020 that while 413 vegan venues had closed since the beginning of the pandemic, a further 517 had opened, a net increase of 104.

Last year’s report saw London and Berlin lead the rankings for the third consecutive year. Meanwhile, Barcelona was the fastest-growing city on the list, having seen a 173% increase in vegan businesses since 2022. Hamburg made its debut, while Bangkok was the only Asian city featured. Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Portland, Paris, and Lisbon comprised the remainder of the top ten.
